My Dog, Chloe

When my best friend died today
In a dignifiedly way
With her friends and family around

She didn't have a thing to say
Just watched me as she slipped away
No longer could she smile or make a sound

Her heart played one last quarter note
Crescendoed, then became remote
The concert she performed each day was through

Her head lay on my arm afloat
As one last breath drew down her throat --
Still, furry friendship’s love survives anew
